Legal Compliance
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
Mandera is fully compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We do not collect any personal data from end users, such as website visitors or app users. Our tracking method does not use cookies, collect IP addresses, fingerprint users, or use device identifiers. By minimizing the data we collect, we ensure full compliance with the principles of data minimization and purpose limitation.
UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR)
Similarly, Mandera complies with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR). Our practices align with the requirements for processing personal data, although we do not collect any personal data, making our compliance straightforward.
Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR)
Mandera is compliant with the UK’s Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). We do not use cookies or similar technologies that store or access information on end-users’ devices. Therefore, we do not require user consent for our tracking activities, as confirmed by the Information Commission Office (ICO).
California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)
Mandera is compliant with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). We do not collect any personal information as defined by the CCPA, which includes data that identifies, relates to, or could be linked to a user or their household.
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
Mandera complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). We do not collect personally identifiable data or protected health information (PHI). Therefore, we are not considered a business associate under HIPAA and do not require a Business Associate Agreement (BAA).
ePrivacy Directive and National Implementations
Mandera complies with the EU’s ePrivacy Directive (Article 5(3)) and its national implementations, such as PECR (UK) and TTDSG (Germany). By not collecting data stored on end-user devices, we ensure that our tracking method is in line with these regulations.
Data Collection and Handling
What We Collect
Unique Visits: Detected based on referrer domain; counts new visitors when referrer doesn’t match the website.
Timestamps: To record when visits occur.
Anonymized User Agents: Truncated to prevent identification (e.g., “Chrome/78.0.0.0”).
Country: Determined via browser timezone, providing only country-level information.
Device Dimensions: Viewport and screen size for device type identification.
Time on Page: Measured by active viewing time, excluding time when the page is hidden, with a minimum threshold of 5 seconds.
Referrers: To track the source of visitors.
UTM Parameters: To identify marketing campaigns.
What We Do Not Collect
Cookies: No cookies or similar tracking technologies are used.
IP Addresses: IP addresses are dropped immediately and not stored or hashed.
Personal Data: No data that can identify an individual is collected.
Data Processing
Data Minimization: We collect only the data necessary for providing analytics.
Anonymization: All collected data is anonymized and cannot be linked to individual users.
Security: Data is stored on EU-based servers with robust security measures, fully encrypted, and never shared or sold.
User Rights and Controls
Since Mandera does not collect personal data, users do not have rights related to data access, correction, or deletion. However, we respect the “Do Not Track” setting in browsers and do not collect data from users who have enabled this feature.
Third-Party Services
Mandera uses European companies for data storage and content delivery, ensuring that all data handling is compliant with EU data protection laws.

Filters
Navigation and Core Settings
Located in the top bar of your dashboard, you’ll find essential controls for customizing your analytics view:
Domain Management
In the top left corner, a dropdown menu allows you to switch between different domains if you have multiple websites added to your account. Each domain’s analytics are kept separate for clear organization.
URL Search
The search bar in the top right lets you quickly find analytics for any specific URL on your selected domain. Simply enter the URL and click it to view detailed statistics for that specific page.
Date Range Selection
In the top right, the date picker allows you to analyze different time periods:
Today
Yesterday
Last 7 days
Last 30 days
Previous month
Last 12 months
All time
Custom date range
All dashboard metrics and charts automatically update to reflect your selected time period.
Source Filtering
Clicking any source in the Sources list filters all dashboard metrics to show data only from that specific traffic source. This filter applies across all charts and metrics, similar to the date range filter.
Single-URL Dashboard
The Single URL Dashboard provides detailed analytics for individual pages on your website. You can access this view by clicking any URL in your dashboard or using the URL search function in the top right.
Page-Specific Metrics
External Visitors
Shows the number of visitors who came directly to this specific URL from external sources. Like the main dashboard’s unique visits metric, this counter uses mandera’s privacy-first approach, identifying unique visits through referrer data rather than cookies or IP addresses.
Total Page Views
The complete count of views for this specific URL, including repeat views. This metric helps you understand the page’s overall traffic volume, regardless of whether visits came from external sources or internal navigation.
Page Visit Duration
Measures how long visitors actively spend on this particular page. Following the same principles as the main dashboard’s time tracking:
Only counts active viewing time
Excludes time spent in other tabs or windows
Removes visits under 3 seconds
Uses median values to avoid outlier skewing
Detailed Breakdowns
The single URL view provides the same comprehensive breakdowns as the main dashboard, but filtered specifically for this page:
Traffic Sources
Shows which external sites and channels are driving traffic specifically to this URL.
Location Data
Displays the geographic distribution of visitors to this particular page, using timezone-based country detection to maintain privacy.
Device Information
Breaks down the technical details of visitors to this specific page:
Browser types
Operating systems
Screen sizes
All metrics and charts in the Single URL Dashboard update automatically based on your selected time period, providing current insights into individual page performance while maintaining mandera’s commitment to privacy-first analytics.
Userflows
mandera’s Userflow analysis provides unique insights into how visitors navigate through your website. This feature is available in two forms: an automatic overview and customizable flows.
Userflow Overview
The User Flow Overview automatically generates a visualization of the most common paths visitors take through your website. Using anonymized visit data from your selected time period, it creates a Sankey diagram showing:
Three most significant traffic sources
Most visited pages from these sources
Common navigation paths between pages
Subsequent page visits
The diagram follows a 4-column structure, with traffic flowing from left to right. Each connection’s width represents the relative volume of traffic taking that path. For example, if 100 visitors land on your homepage and 50% continue to your product page, the flow between these pages will show 50 visitors.
This overview updates automatically when you change the time period, giving you a current view of user behavior patterns. Because mandera doesn’t track individual users, these flows represent aggregated data based on page view sequences.
Custom Userflow
For more detailed analysis, you can create custom user flows to examine specific user journeys. With a single-site license, you can create up to 5 custom flows, each showing:
Up to 4 specific URLs of your choice
Traffic flow between these pages
Percentage of visitors following each path
Total visitor numbers per page
These custom flows help you analyze specific user journeys, such as:
Sign-up processes
Purchase funnels
Content engagement paths
Campaign performance
Like the overview, custom flows calculate traffic based on aggregated page view data, ensuring user privacy while providing valuable insights into website performance.
Charts
mandera’s dashboard provides key insights through clear visualizations that respect user privacy while delivering accurate analytics data. The charts section is designed to give you a comprehensive view of your website’s performance through various metrics.
Visitors
At the heart of your dashboard is the visitors overview, displaying your site’s core metrics through intuitive line graphs. Each metric is carefully calculated to provide accurate data without compromising visitor privacy.
Unique Visits shows the number of distinct visitors to your site. Unlike traditional analytics tools that use cookies or IP addresses, mandera takes a privacy-first approach to identifying unique visits. When a visitor comes from an external site, they are counted as a unique visitor. If they navigate to different pages within your site, these are considered part of the same visit. Due to our privacy-first approach, visits from different devices or on different days count as separate unique visitors.
Total Page Views represents the complete count of pages viewed across all visitors. This includes repeat views of the same page and provides a raw measure of your content’s visibility. We accurately track page views even on single-page applications, ensuring you get reliable data regardless of your website’s architecture.
Pages Per Visit helps you understand how extensively visitors explore your site. This metric is calculated by dividing total page views by the number of visits, giving you insight into visitor engagement and content discovery patterns.
Visit Duration measures the actual time visitors spend actively viewing your pages. Unlike other analytics tools, mandera is precise about time measurement. We only count the time when visitors are actively on your page – if they switch to a different tab or website, we pause the counter. To ensure accuracy, we exclude visits shorter than 3 seconds from this calculation, as these often represent bounces rather than genuine engagement. Additionally, we use median values instead of averages to prevent outliers (like someone leaving a tab open overnight) from skewing your data.
Pages
The Pages section of your dashboard provides two distinct views of your content performance.
The Top Pages view shows a ranked list of your most visited pages. Each entry displays the page’s URL and visit count, updated according to your selected time period. To keep the data clean and meaningful, we strip out query parameters and anchors from URLs. This gives you a clear picture of which content attracts the most attention.
For pages you want to monitor regularly, the Saved Pages feature allows you to bookmark specific URLs for quick access. This is particularly useful for tracking performance of key landing pages, marketing campaigns, or important content over time.
Sources
The Sources view reveals where your traffic originates. Rather than tracking individual referral chains, mandera collects this data through browser-provided referrer information when a visitor lands on your site. Each source domain is listed with its corresponding visit count, helping you understand which channels drive traffic to your website. We maintain privacy by only storing the domain of the referring site, not the full URL or any personal data.
Locations
mandera provides geographic insights through two complementary views:
The interactive map visualization offers an immediate global overview of your visitor distribution. Rather than using IP addresses for geolocation (which would compromise privacy), we determine location based on visitors’ timezone settings. This approach provides country-level accuracy while maintaining user anonymity.
The list view breaks down the same data in a detailed country-by-country format, showing visit counts for each region. Since we use timezone data, we can’t track cities or regions within countries – a deliberate choice that enhances privacy while still providing valuable geographic insights.
Devices
The Devices section presents three key aspects of your visitors’ technical environment through clear pie charts:
The Browser breakdown shows the distribution of web browsers used to access your site. We collect this information from anonymized user agent data, stripping out detailed version numbers and potential identifying information while maintaining useful statistics.
Operating System data is gathered similarly, showing the proportion of visitors using different platforms (like Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android).
Screen Size information helps you understand how your site appears to visitors, collecting only the basic dimensions necessary for this insight. This data is invaluable for ensuring your site works well across all devices without tracking any personal information.
Each chart in the Devices section automatically updates based on your selected time period and any active filters, providing a current view of how people access your site.
WordPress Quick-start
Adding the mandera tracking-snippet to your WordPress website
To set up mandera for your website, you need to insert a short code snippet into the header section of your site. Here’s how to do it within 2 minutes:
Log in to your WordPress dashboard, go to “Plugins” –> “Add new Plugin” and search for the free plugin WPCode:
2. Install and activate it. You can access the “Code Snippets”-section of the Plugin either by clicking on “Code Snippets” in your WordPress dashboard menu on the left side, or through “Plugins” and clicking on “Code Snippets” at the WPCode Lite entry. When you are in the Plugin dashboard, click on “Add New”, then “+ Add Custom Snippet” and then “HTML Snippet”.
3. Paste your mandera analytics tracking snippet in the 1st line of the field. Then switch the toggle at the top to “active” and press “Save Snippet” – done.
4. If you want to test if your tracking is working properly, you can go to your website now and click around on a few pages. At this point, data should show up in the mandera analytics dashboard.
How we track
At mandera analytics, we collect the necessary information to provide you with valuable insights while maintaining the highest privacy standards for your visitors. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what we do and don’t collect.
Our Privacy-First Promise
Privacy isn’t just a feature – it’s our foundation. We’ve built mandera analytics with a strict privacy-first approach that ensures:
No cookies or tracking technologies
No collection of personal data
No IP address storage or hashing
Full GDPR, PECR, and CCPA compliance by default
EU-based infrastructure and operations (German company and German server location)
What We Do Not Collect
No Cookies
We never set any cookies or use similar technologies. Cookies can track visitors across multiple pages or even multiple websites – this is a hard no for us. This includes:
No local storage
No session cookies
No fingerprinting
No IP address hashing
No IP Addresses
We drop the IP address from every single request. Period. We don’t save them, we don’t collect them, and we don’t hash them with cryptography. Your visitors remain completely anonymous.
What We Do Collect
Unique Visits
Our unique visit detection is truly unique. Instead of using invasive methods like cookies or IP addresses, we detect unique visits based on the referrer domain. When a user comes from one domain to another, their browser shares the previous domain. If the current page’s domain matches the referrer, we know it’s a non-unique visit:
Timestamps
We collect timestamps to generate your analytics graphs and allow you to analyze changes in your website’s performance over time. This data is completely anonymous and cannot be tied to individual visitors.
User Agents (Anonymized)
We collect anonymized user agent data only to:
Detect and exclude bots
Count operating systems, device types, and browsers
Provide aggregated device statistics
We automatically anonymize user agent strings by truncating version numbers. For example: Chrome/78.0.3904.108 becomes Chrome/78.0.0.0
Country Detection
Unlike services that use IP addresses for geolocation, we determine a visitor’s country based on their timezone. This provides country-level insights without compromising privacy. We can’t and don’t track cities or regions within countries.
Device Information
We collect basic device dimensions (viewport and screen size) to help you understand how your website appears across different devices. This information is purely technical and cannot identify individual visitors.
Time on Page
We measure actual engagement time, not just open tabs. Our time-on-page metric:
Excludes time when the page is hidden
Uses median instead of average to avoid outlier skew
Provides more accurate engagement data than traditional analytics
Ignores visits shorter than 3 seconds to filter out bots and accidental page loads
Referrers and UTM Parameters
We collect referrer information to show you where your traffic comes from. For UTM tracking, we collect:
utm_source
utm_medium
utm_campaign
utm_content
Additional Features
Single Page Applications (SPAs)
For SPAs, we automatically handle unique visit detection and page transitions without compromising privacy.
Do Not Track
We respect the Do Not Track browser setting by default. While we never track individual users anyway, we exclude these visits entirely from your analytics when Do Not Track is enabled.
